There are so many aspects of life, some peaceful, some joyful while some stressful. These feelings can be overwhelming especially stress. Stress is a more generic term and can be stated as a temporary state of mind caused by the emotional situation. Stress can extend into anxiety. Anxiety is recognised as a disorder which affects our feelings & behaviour.

Different reasons like examination, interview, important meeting, a specific type of environment can cause anxiety. Anxiety can cause fear, nervousness, self-doubt and can interfere with a person’s day to day life.

Symptoms of anxiety include –

  • short breath
  • dizziness
  • sinking or elevated heart beat
  • lack of concentration
  • nausea
  • feeling irritated
  • lack of sleep

Types of Anxiety Disorder –

Some of the common anxiety orders include-

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – GAD is an anxiety triggered by general events like everyday task, meeting, work environment, stress at home, work or between friends or partners. The reason is not specific but can be caused by anything in general.

Phobia – Phobia is extreme and irrational fear of something, like fear of heights, fear of taking elevators, fear of being in a closed room, fear of getting physically close, fear of travelling by car/train/bus.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – OCD is a chronic and long-lasting disorder where the person has compulsive urges and feels the need to repeat it, like organizing everything and in a manner, over cleaning of everything around or handwashing.

Panic Disorder – A sudden and overwhelming fear or anxiety causing short breaths, higher heart beats, dryness of mouth. There are usually initiated by a specific situation like public speaking, being in a crowded room, surrounded by strangers.

Pots-traumatic Stress Disorder – PTSD is experience if a person has been through trauma and is having nightmares or flashbacks which give a feeling of reliving the same anxiety and fear again.

How to deal with Stress & Anxiety?

The first step to is accepting the situation. There are various ways to deal with stress-

  • talking to someone
  • taking a deep breath during the stressful situation
  • meditating
  • walking
  • regular exercising
  • reading
  • eating well
  • developing a hobby or interest.
